Wing Tags - What's that all about ??

In order to monitor the movements and survival rates of Red Kites in the reintroduction areas, all released, and many wild-fledged, birds are fitted with plastic wing-tags so that they can be identified. This is possible with binoculars, a spotting scope, or a telephoto lens camera.

tags

Both wing tags have a small stripe at the bottom, the colour of which corresponds to the main colour of the other wing tag.

This means that if one tag falls off as often happens after about 3 to 5 years you can identify the bird using just the one remaining tag.

So what is this then ??? Its the left wing tag from a chiltern kite fledged in 2000 Point at the tag to find out.
